What is webbing?
Webbing is chair caning with wide straps that are stretched and mounted on the seat, back, or both of a chair. Depending on the chair model, the webbing can be laid in parallel strips or form a woven pattern.
At DKA Design, we work with webbing in linen, cotton, and leather. Material, width, and pattern are chosen based on the chair's construction and the agreed-upon solution. Webbing differs from, among other things, envelope weave in paper yarn and cane weaving in rattan, because the seat or back is built up with wide webbing straps.
Which chairs with webbing do we work with?
Webbing is found on dining chairs, lounge chairs, armchairs, and sofas. DKA Design works with a range of classic chairs with webbing, including models by Bruno Mathsson, Alvar Aalto, Morten Gøttler and Børge Mogensen.
When is it necessary to replace chair webbing?
It may be time to have the webbing evaluated when:
- one or more straps are broken
- the webbing is frayed or noticeably worn
- the seat or back has lost its tension
- the weave hangs loosely or feels uneven
- the seat sags more than before
- the webbing has come loose from the frame
A chair with webbing should be assessed as a whole before new webbing is installed. If the attachment points, joints, or wood are damaged, this may affect how the work should be carried out.
How webbing replacement is done
A webbing repair begins with an assessment of the chair and the existing weave. This includes looking at the construction, the condition of the webbing, and how it is attached.
The old and worn webbing is removed, and the attachment points are checked before the new webbing is installed. Then, the material suitable for the chair is selected, and the webbing is tensioned and woven in the relevant pattern.
Finally, the seat or back is checked to ensure that the webbing lies evenly and has a tension appropriate for the construction. If the chair also has loose joints, wood damage, or needs surface treatment, this is assessed as a separate part of the task.
How much do new webbing straps for a chair cost?
The price of new webbing for a chair depends on the specific model and task. On this page and on DKA Design's pricing page, you will find prices for selected chairs with webbing. For other models, the chair must be assessed before a price can be given.
It must also be clarified whether the task includes the seat, back, or both, and whether the chair has other damage that should be repaired. The price on the individual product page applies to the described webbing task. Further work on woodwork or joints is assessed separately.
