A little about French braid
In French braiding, pre-braided rolls are used where the pattern is made, and it is typically mounted on the chair by knocking off a strip along the edges of the chair seat, and then the machine braid is mounted in a dedicated joint on the strip, which is then attached with an associated glue strip.
Several of the old Thonet chairs are made with handmade "machine braid"! This is because the chair has a series of holes through which the braid has to run. Therefore, you cannot install an entire piece of machine braid at once. It is very lovely, but very, very time-consuming, so it is not typically something we do here.

Beauty in need of gentle treatment
Machine wicker is (like wicker ) relatively vulnerable. It cannot withstand focused pressure, such as stepping on a chair with one foot to change a light bulb or the like. We often see chairs with machine wicker that have damage caused by this type of stress. However, if you treat the chairs properly, the machine wicker will last for many years.
