The Y-chair, also known as CH24, is perhaps Wegner's most iconic design. With its characteristic Y-shaped backrest and envelope-woven seat, it is both elegant and comfortable. The Y-chair fits into any interior and is an expression of Danish design at its best.
In Hans J. Wegner's very famous Y-chair's envelope braid, we have a Y-shaped piece that goes down, and here there is a crack where the cord should go down. Here it is (also) important that all the back cords are at an angle from the Y-piece. This is typically where you check the quality of a Y-chair's envelope braid.

At DKA Design, we offer gentle and precise re-weaving and repair of the Y chair, so you can maintain both comfort, aesthetics and value for many years to come.
New wicker and repair of Y-chair with respect for the original
We replace defective or worn Y chair wicker with new envelope wicker in paper yarn – hand-woven according to Wegner's original method. If you need to re-weave a Y chair, we ensure that the finished result matches the chair's original expression and structure.
We also repair the back and frame of the Y-chair – including cleaning, gluing and treatment if the woodwork is loose or dry. Our work is carried out in our own workshop in Kongens Lyngby and is offered throughout Copenhagen, the surrounding area and many other cities.

How to weave a Y-stool – step by step
- Assessment and advice – you send 2–3 photos (seat, back/edges and any damage). We review the age/condition and recommend a solution.
- Dismantling and preparation – remnants of old wicker are removed, tenons/edges are cleaned, and irregularities are smoothed out.
- Hand-braided envelope braid in paper yarn – we braid according to the original method, in tight and uniform strands, so that comfort and wear are correct.
- Tightening and finishing – the braid is tightened and trimmed neatly so that the pattern and edges are straight.
- Handover – we go through the chair together and give specific advice on use and care.

Materials and finishes – true to Wegner's intention
The classic material for CH24 is paper yarn. We use quality yarn with the correct thickness and structure, so that the wicker has the right load-bearing capacity and the right expression. The woodwork can – by agreement – be cleaned and lightly refreshed, so that the surface is even and clean. If you want a more significant change in color/gloss (e.g. soap/oil/tinted varnish or painted frame), we can coordinate a complete solution – see painting & varnishing .
Typical damages we repair on the Y-chair
- Worn or broken weave in the seat – typically in the middle or at the front edge.
- Loose joints/pins in the back and armrests – fix, glue and tighten.
- Dry or marked surfaces in the wood – gentle cleaning and easy smoothing.
- Small nicks/scratches – repair so that the profile and edge are preserved.
Our Y-chair repair is always based on original geometry and proportions – no “construction” that changes the design.
Maintenance: how to make wicker and wood last longer
- Daily use: avoid point loads; distribute weight evenly across the seat.
- Cleaning: vacuum the wicker regularly with a soft brush. Wipe the woodwork with a hard wrung cloth – do not soak.
- Climate: normal room temperature and humidity – avoid direct sun and very dry air for extended periods.
- Stain treatment: dab gently – no harsh scrubbing or aggressive cleaning agents.
If you have multiple CH24s in the same room, we recommend interlacing the entire set in one go. This provides consistent color and tension – and typically a faster, overall process.

Det er vigtigt for både komfort, spænding og udtryk, at garnet har de rigtige egenskaber. Når materialet matcher det oprindelige, får du et sæde, der føles og patinerer, som det var tænkt fra starten.
Hvordan kan jeg se, om min Y-stol bør omflettes?
De tydeligste tegn er, at sædet hænger eller giver efter, at der er synlige brud eller flosser i garnet, eller at mønstret virker ujævnt og forskubbet. Nogle oplever også knirken eller ubehag, når de sætter sig. Er du i tvivl, kan du sende et par billeder af stolen, så vurderer vi, om det er tid til en omfletning, eller om den kan klare sig lidt endnu.
Hvor længe holder et nyt sæde på en Y-stol?
Et nyt flettet sæde på en Y-stol holder i mange år, når det er udført korrekt og i materialer af den rette kvalitet. For de fleste brugere ligger levetiden typisk mellem 8 og 15 år, afhængigt af brugsmønster, indeklima og belastning. Papirgarn af god kvalitet er et slidstærkt materiale, men det påvirkes naturligt af daglig brug, kropsvægt, luftfugtighed og sollys. Et sæde, som bruges dagligt i et hjem med børn eller hyppige gæster, slides hurtigere end et, der kun bruges lejlighedsvis. Samtidig kan meget tør luft i vintermånederne eller direkte sollys over længere tid gøre fibrene mere sprøde. Når sædet flettes tæt, korrekt spændt og efter original metode, holder det i den længere ende af skalaen og patinerer smukt, som designet er skabt til.
