A little about the man

Hans J. Wegner

Hans Wegner (1914 – 2007), also known as the “Master of the Chair”, was trained as a cabinetmaker in 1931 and studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen from 1936-1938. In 1940-1943 he designed the furniture for, for example, Arne Jacobsen’s town hall in Aarhus. Wegner worked as an independent architect and was employed as a teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts’ Furniture School. After 1940 he designed furniture for Danish companies.

ORIGINAL HANS J. WEGNER CHAIR WICKET

We are specialists in Hans J. Wegner chair wicker

Wegner is a well-known Danish design icon, famous all over the world for his classic and elegant furniture. He (and Børge Mogensen) have managed to design furniture where wickerwork is wonderfully integrated into the construction and expression of the furniture. Wegner's furniture is generally a little more elegant and delicate in its expression, with a little more detail, while being classic and extremely robust. They look good in almost any context.

His most famous chair is the Y-chair, which has become increasingly popular over time. Everyone wants a Y-chair, and it is in practically every home today. It has a certain lightness about it with incredibly fine details, it can stand alone or be assembled and is available in several versions, in a multitude of colors. When we get Y-chairs in for weaving, we often see that they are very loose in the frame, and therefore need to be glued and stabilized before they can be woven, and that can take some time. But we of course offer to fix it with both weaving, repair, wood treatment and cleaning.

Braided classics

In addition to the Y-chair, we often see Wegner's armchair, CH25. This is also a well-known and very popular classic, and it is braided with what is called flat braid, in a special cross-braided pattern. This requires more than 400 meters of paper yarn, and it takes about 10 hours to braid by hand. It is a chair that becomes more beautiful and more beautiful over the years, among other things because the chair's patina contrasts so beautifully with the light (and sometimes black) braid. We have many CH25 "patients" here with us, and what they all have in common is that we always think they have become more beautiful than a new chair.

And when we have mentioned CH25 we should also mention CH27, which is also incredibly beautiful. It is very similar to CH25, but here the chassis is designed a little differently and its braid uses sjener (bamboo strips), whose light tones create a beautiful contrast to the classic chassis. We don't see many of these here, but we are excited every time.

Functional design and braiding options

We also see his classic and very beautiful rocking chair J16 from time to time, as well as the chairs CH23 and CH36. CH23 is also a classic chair that is a bit reminiscent of Børge Mogensen's "Folkestol" J39, but this one has, among other things, thinner paper yarn in a flat weave with details down the side leg, which is incredibly beautiful, and it is a very strong weave. It can also be woven with sjener. It is also available in different types of wood and versions. Ch36 is made with envelope weave.

Finally, in the series of Hans Wegner gems, we would like to mention the CH22 armchair and the W2 dining chair. The CH22 is also incredibly beautiful, with a finely designed back leaf and other small details, and it is braided with an envelope. We see this chair more and more, as its popularity is constantly increasing. The W2 is very characteristic, with a well-thought-out, very aesthetic backrest.
